Options for dealing with squatting

Options for dealing with squatting is a collectively authored book of responses to the Ministry of Justice consultation of the same name. It draws on the tradition of collective authorship (Karen Elliot, Luther Blissett, Wu-Ming) to examine practically the philosophical question of individual ownership.

Options for dealing with squatting sets out to answer 22 questions about the 20,000 and 50,000 squatters estimated by the UK government. This difference represents a large gap in their knowledge. Though definitions are constantly attempted, nobody seems able to say for sure who or what exactly a squatter is: they are variously portrayed as among the most vulnerable in society, opportunists, criminals, and revolutionaries. Whoever they are, many of their responses – opinions that have otherwise been ignored – appear in the pages of this short book.

Praise for Options for dealing with squatting:

“As the Metropolitan Police say, and this brilliant publication reveals, most buildings that squatters live in have been abandoned or are otherwise empty. When peoples’ only choice is criminalised, the legality of the law itself is discredited.” —Danny Dorling, Oxford University.
