‘England is not a free people, till the poor have a free allowance to dig and labour the commons’
—Gerrard Winstanley, 1649
A2 Poster produced by the Solidarity Economy Association. A small, worker-led co-operative based in England, Scotland and Wales, working to overcome capitalism by building up the solidarity economy from below.
But who was Gerrard Winstanley?
Well! A founder of the English group known as the Diggers. The group occupied formerly common land that had been privatised by enclosures. The Diggers dug them over, pulling down hedges and filling in ditches, to plant crops.
